healthy lifestyle staples: life equals probiotic
a few months ago, i was contacted by the founders of life equals, a company that creates dietary supplements, about a potential partnership with their company. of course, the first thing i did was research … i checked out their website and immediately liked what i saw. not only do they create a variety of different dietary supplements, but their mission and values really aligned with my own for a few reasons …
for starters, they’re all about balance … and you probably know by now how important balance is to me, and they focus on bringing health to people on the individual level through small daily actions. second, all of their products are made from organic, all-natural, non-gmo ingredients and are 100% vegan … so yea, no brainer there. finally, they give back. for every purchase, life equals donates a month worth of vitamins to a child in a developing country. pretty cool, right?
i mean, sure, it sounded great, but i can’t get on board with something, no matter how great it sounds, without actually trying it and experiencing it firsthand. so, i did just that … and have been pretty freakin’ happy with the results!
for the past few months, i’ve been using their probiotic and loving it! i’ve been taking a probiotic religiously for the past year and half … it was a total game changer for me and something i saw make an impact on how i felt almost immediately … so i was a little nervous about switching it up. luckily, life equals makes an amazing product that works and i feel good about getting behind. if you aren’t familiar with the benefits of taking a daily probiotic, i’ll name a few here …
- improved digestion
- better immunity
- weight control
preliminary research even shows that they can help to keep allergies under control. basically, long story short, when your gut and digestive system are both healthy, you’re going to experience better overall health.
i also tried their focus + energy supplements, which are great in the afternoon when i’m getting that “2:30 feeling” and don’t want to dive into another cup of coffee, but still need a little boost.
so … what am i getting at here? if you’re already taking supplements of any kind, check out life equals … they give back in a big way, so it’s worth considering the change if you’re into contributing to the world positively … with no extra effort required.
they’re also a subscription service … once you’re a member, you decide what, and how often, your supplements get delivered. so there’s no having to remember to place an order when you’re about to run out [or once you already have!] … they take care of that for you! so easy, right?!
finally, life equals is so generously offering the bananas + bellinis community 75% OFF and FREE SHIPPING on their first monthly subscription order with the code KEL75 at checkout.
so, if you’re into it and wanna give them a try … why not with a discount like that?! if you have questions, shoot me an email! i’d be happy to tell you more about my experience with their products and give you some recommendations. my email is firstname.lastname@example.org … can’t wait to hear from you!

- prevents headaches, including migraines

product review: block island organics sunscreen + special offer
i always love trying out new products that are organic, all-natural and don’t contain any harmful ingredients to find out what actually works, so when block island organics reached out to me and asked if i would like to try out their sunscreen, i was obviously onboard. i decided that reviewing products the same way i review fitness classes was probably a good idea, so we’ll be following the same “banana system” seen here, here and here.
i don’t think i need to go into detail about why you should be wearing sunscreen because, let’s face it, it’s 2015 and that type of thing is just common knowledge these days. unfortunately, sunscreen is one of those things that everyone knows they should be using, but still decide to go without … for a variety of reasons.
and i’m definitely guilty of this. i hate how sunscreen tends to be super greasy and difficult to blend into my skin, leaving a weird, uncomfortable film of lotion on my body that gets on my clothes, into my eyes, and makes my hair look as if i haven’t showered in a few weeks. the spray sunscreens, which are supposed to make life easier, do just the opposite. they are equally as messy and don’t offer even coverage, which can cause weird, streaky tan/burn lines. a girl seriously can’t win.
[we should all make sunscreen one of our beach necessities.]
luckily, block island organics solves all of these #firstworldproblems with their natural mineral sunscreen. it’s still a lotion, but it’s not super thick or greasy, so it doesn’t leave an oily layer behind. it’s easy to massage into your skin, which ensures even coverage and this stuff is seriously sweat-proof. i put it on before i biked about a mile and then took an intense 90-minute vinyasa flow yoga class where i got mega-sweaty. only in the last 15 minutes of class did i start to notice that i was sweating off the lotion just a tiny bit. not only does it work, it’s made in the USA, vegan, gluten-free and all-natural … free of parabens, dyes, phthalates, and all of that other sh*t we don’t want to be putting on our bodies. the verdict?
4/5 bananas for block island organics!
want to get your hands on some of this stuff for the last few weeks of summer? i’m sure your skin could certainly use some t.l.c.! from today [august 12th, 2015] until august 18th, 2015 at 11:59pm eastern time, the block island organics family is offering all bananas + bellinis readers 15% off their entire purchase at www.blockislandorganics.com! just use the code “kelsey” at checkout! [this cannot be combined with any other offer.]
please note that while this post was made possible by block island organics, all opinions expressed here are my own!
healthy lifestyle staples: apple cider vinegar
the healthy lifestyle staples series is my chance to let all of you in on all of the healthy products that i cannot live without and always keep on hand. from reusable water bottles to tongue scrapers to hot lemon water, there are quite a few things that i rely on to make my life easier and healthier on a regular basis…. and as the list continues to grow, i want to make sure I’m keeping all of you in the loop! today, i’m bringing you the low down on apple cider vinegar and why it’s one of the staples in my arsenal of healthy products.
apple cider vinegar is one of those products, much like coconut oil, that has more uses than i can even begin to list here. among those ways, it can do many things from balancing your body’s pH to disinfecting surfaces in your home and it works wonders on your hair and skin. here are 5 simple ways that i use apple cider vinegar on a day-to-day basis that you can start doing right away:
- as an all-natural toner: apple cider vinegar is great for balancing your skin’s pH and evening out your skin tone naturally. because it’s rather strong, you should always dilute it with water before applying it directly to your face. i make my own apple cider vinegar toner [recipe here] and use this as a part of my morning and evening skincare routine every. single. day.
- as a hair rinse: dilute some apple cider vinegar with water [i usually do about 1 part apple cider vinegar to 10 parts water] and pour it over your hair immediately after shampooing and conditioning. it will strip any leftover residue from your locks and leave them silkier and shinier than you can even imagine… just be careful to not get any in your eyes!
- to detoxify your body: every single morning, without fail, i always drink a cup of hot lemon water with cayenne pepper, turmeric and a cap-full of apple cider vinegar [recipe here]. while balancing your body’s internal pH, apple cider vinegar has also been shown to help stimulate the lymphatic system, clear out sinus congestion and detoxify the liver. getting all of these benefits is as easy as adding a tablespoon to the first glass of water you drink each day.
- to clean your home: apple cider vinegar can replace quite a few household cleaners, which not only reduces the amount of chemicals you are exposed to on a daily basis, but will help you save a little money [and space!], too. mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of water to make an all-natural cleaner [you can mix the two together in a spray bottle to make it easier to use] that can be used on sinks, stoves, ovens, countertops and even your bathtub/shower.
- as a mouthwash: apple cider vinegar can brighten those pearly whites and fight bad breath. gargle a mixture of 1 part apple cider vinegar and 2 parts water before brushing your teeth once a day [i do this in the evening since i usually oil pull in the morning].
bonus tip! another way to sneak some apple cider vinegar into your diet is by using a teaspoon or so as a salad dressing along with a little olive oil… yum.
you can purchase apple cider vinegar at just about any grocery store these days, but i highly recommend buying a raw, organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized version, such as bragg’s.
do you have any other ways of using apple cider vinegar in your every day life? share in the comments below!

healthy lifestyle staples: detoxifying lemon water
one of my favorite, cannot live without healthy lifestyle staples is kinda weird [but that should be no surprise at this point]. i was introduced to this little concoction in college and would occasionally throw it into my routine here and there over the years, but only in the past year or so has it become a staple in my regimen.
hot lemon water. with apple cider vinegar. and turmeric. and cayenne pepper. every morning. before breakfast.
i knowwww what you’re thinking: no. but let me explain.
first, hot water with a little bit of lemon is a great way to wake up your digestive system and detoxify your body from the day before…essentially, you’re starting the day with a clean slate.
second, the apple cider vinegar will balance your pH levels aiding digestion, improving immunity and helping to clear up your skin.
finally, the turmeric helps reduce inflammation in the body, and the cayenne pepper gives your digestive system one last little boost.
now we’re talkin’, right? for this detoxifying lemon water elixir all you’ll need is:
- 8 oz. of water, brought to a boil
- the juice from half of a lemon
- 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp. turmeric
- cayenne pepper to taste
all you need to do is boil the water, pour it into a mug and stir in the lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, turmeric and cayenne pepper. drink this in the mornings before you eat or drink anything else and try to make this a daily habit if at all possible… that’s how you’ll reap the most benefits!
healthy lifestyle staples: skin brushing
the healthy lifestyle staples series here at bananas + bellinis is something that i think is really important. not only do i get to give you a glimpse of some of the things i do/use on a regular basis, i also get to show you how easy it can be to incorporate healthy habits into your day-to-day life.
today, i want to add another item to my list of healthy lifestyle staples: skin brushing. skin brushing is known to have many health and beauty benefits, such as reducing cellulite, stimulating the lymphatic system, aiding digestion and detoxification of the body, increasing energy and circulation and exfoliating the skin.
the skin is the largest organ in the body and its job is essentially to protect us from anything that might be harmful [toxins, germs, viruses, bacteria, etc]. if the skin is not well taken care of, it’s ability to protect us decreases. skin brushing is an easy way to keep the skin in tip-top shape as a part of your regular skincare regimen.
so, how does it work? by stimulating the skin, you’re essentially getting a bunch of the other systems in your body working. it’s best to do first thing in the morning before showering when your skin is dry and your system is relaxed. you should always brush in the direction of your heart, as this is the way the lymphatic system naturally flows. start with the soles of your feet [the nerve endings there are connected to your entire body], working your way up your legs, over your stomach, booty, hands, arms, chest [ladies, be sure to avoid the ladies, if ya catch my drift] and down your back [see the diagram below]. because you’ve just exfoliated, showering after skin brushing is the best way to go so that you can wash away all of the the dead skins cells. apply some lotion [or coconut oil!] after your shower to soothe the skin and moisturize. you should notice a difference in how your skin looks and feels almost immediately.
a few things to keep in mind when skin brushing:
- don’t brush too hard, you don’t want to irritate the skin
- skip over any cuts, rashes, irritations or varicose veins
- leave your face and neck alone since the skin there is so sensitive
ready to give skin brushing a try? you can buy a skin brush at most drug or health food stores for under $20. you can always order one online, too!

3 reasons you should start oil pulling
oil pulling is one of those things i had known about for a really long time before taking the plunge and trying it out for myself. i mean… who wants to swish a tablespoon of oil around in their mouth for 20 minutes? not me… or so i thought.
after doing more research and reading about all of the amazing health benefits of oil pulling, my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to give it a try. oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic practice that is said to rid not only the mouth, but the entire body, of harmful toxins while restoring balance throughout your system. as you might have guessed, once i started oil pulling, i became obsessed with it.
basically, all you do is pick an oil [i recommend coconut oil because of it’s strong anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties and mild taste], swish around a tablespoon of it in your mouth for 15-20 minutes on an empty stomach and spit the oil out into the trash can, not the sink. it was easiest to work into my daily routine by taking a spoonful of oil right before brushing my teeth and hopping in the shower in the morning. here are three reasons you should make it part of your day-to-day routine, as well!
- it improves oral health. after just a few days you should notice whiter teeth and better breath. over time oil pulling will also build up the strength of your teeth and gums.
- it can reduce the symptoms of allergies. this includes sinus congestion, mucus build up in the chest and that terrible dried out feeling you sometimes experience in your sinuses.
- it can improve skin issues. because oil pulling rids the entire body of toxins, many have experienced clearer skin and reduced severity of eczema after oil pulling regularly. this can be super helpful even if you don’t experience severe acne, especially in the cold, dry winter months.
other reported benefits of oil pulling include reduction of sleep issues, elevated energy levels, reduced inflammation, improved kidney function, correction of hormone imbalances and, my personal favorite, alleviated symptoms of a hangover.
i recommend trying this out for at least a week to see what kinds of changes you notice before making a decision about it one way or another. the first few times can be kind of rough [swishing around a spoonful of oil in your mouth is definitely something that takes time to get used to] and if you can’t make it through the entire 20 minutes at first, don’t worry! you’ll slowly get used to it and once you start seeing and feeling the benefits, you’ll probably wonder how you ever lived without it.

miracle hangover cure: milk thistle extract
as you probably know, one of the recurring themes here at bananas + bellinis is balance, simply because i believe that in order to live a healthy life, you have to live a happy life and happiness doesn’t come from deprivation, restriction or self-inflicted punishment or criticism. i know from personal experience that depriving yourself, obsessing over your food intake and criticizing yourself for your appearance, weight, financial status, life choices, etc. does not lead to happiness… at all.
one thing that i’m not afraid to share is my love for going out and enjoying myself over a few drinks. cocktails, beer, wine… i like all of it. i believe that in moderation, having a drink or two… or three… is perfectly fine and nothing to feel bad about. now, with that being said, there is one kinda out there, health nut thing that i do to give my liver a little prep and that is incorporating milk thistle extract into my supplement regimen the day of an event I know i’ll be drinking at.
milk thistle extract is something that i was introduced to when i was doing a 30-day mind-body cleanse last january and it has seriously changed my life. milk thistle is a plant and the extract that comes from its leaves is known for its ability to detoxify and protect the liver and its vital functions, so obviously this stuff has a place when it comes to the prevention/cure of hangovers.
you can purchase milk thistle extract in tincture or pill form [i prefer the tincture] and take it during the day when you know you have a happy hour or a birthday party to attend. you can put a dropper full in your water or tea as much as you would like throughout the course of the day [the taste isn’t strong] or directly into your drink while at the event. the morning after a night of drinking, especially if I’m not having an #iwokeuplikethis moment, i’ll also put a dropper full into a glass of ice cold water and before i know it, i’m back to 100%.
of course, this trick is much less effective if you drink a lot, a lot or if you start mixing alcohol [that’s never a good idea and I can’t help you there], but give this a try the next time you go out for a few drinks and I promise you won’t know how you ever lived without it.

healthy lifestyle staples: tongue scraping
okay, i know what you’re thinking. tongue scraping? is she serious? what even is that?! well, i’m 100% serious and after you read this article, i guarantee you’ll go buy yourself a tongue scraper and love it.
so, why is this a healthy lifestyle staple? tongue scraping, or jiva shodhana in sanskrit, is an ancient ayurvedic practice that is known for not only keeping your mouth extra clean, but can help to detoxify the entire body, as well. here are three great reasons to start using a tongue scraper asap:
- it improves oral health. because tongue scraping removes the bacteria that forms on your tongue throughout the day, it will ultimately leave you with fresher breath, less plaque buildup and healthier gums. it can also reduce your chances of getting cavities.
- it aids digestion. tongue scraping will clear up your taste buds so that you can really taste the food you are eating and begin the digestion process smoothly. digestion begins with salivation and if you can’t truly taste your food, your body won’t know how to properly begin to break it down, which can screw up the whole process. and no one wants that.
- it boosts your immunity. because the tongue is the first line of defense in your immune system, removing toxins and bacteria from it can prevent them from being reabsorbed into the body, which is especially important during cold and flu season.
i know that this sounds really weird, but give it a try. i guarantee once you start you will wonder how you have ever gone without doing it. it’s best to do it twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, right after you brush your teeth. i personally use this tongue scraper by dr. tung’s. the stainless steel versions are preferable to the plastic ones and you can purchase one on amazon for around $5-$7.

healthy lifestyle staples: reusable water bottles
as a human living in the 21st century, it seriously amazes me how good, clean, pure water is nearly impossible to come by… unless, of course, you live in the mountains next to a spring you can drink from… but i’m assuming for most of us, this is not even close to being the case.
bottled water isn’t even safe these days… they are actually adding things like magnesium sulfate [bath salts], potassium chloride [used in lethal injections to stop the heart] and straight up salt to bottled water. dasani has recently taken a lot of heat for this, but unfortunately, they’re not the only company adding things to their water. it’s pretty pathetic that i now find myself reading the ingredients lists on bottled water… that literally makes no sense. and, as if this wasn’t already bad enough, the plastic bottles that water comes in contain even more chemicals [that I cannot spell or pronounce] and the most talked about of them all, bisphenol a [bpa] is known to cause breast cancer and birth defects. effing awesome.
if you’re anything like me, you’re most likely asking yourself, “soooo, what the eff am i supposed to be drinking?” some of you may be surprised by this answer, but i seriously believe that the best, healthiest and safest water for us to be drinking is tap water. now, i know that there is really no way to know 100% for sure what’s in the water that comes out of our faucets, but i’ve reached a point where i feel like as long as it’s been filtered, tap is the way to go. it’s time to kick the bottled water habit to the curb.
the best thing you can do to kick the bottled water habit fast is to find a fun reusable water bottle that you can easily throw into your bag and take everywhere with you. there are tons of companies that now make glass, aluminum and plastic water bottles in a variety of colors and prints that are not only safe, but look great and will also help you to reduce the amount of waste you are contributing to the planet.
some of these companies even use recycled materials for their products and donate a portion of their profits to charity. i’m pretty much obsessed with bkr bottles, which are pictured above, but klean kanteen, sigg, and hydros also have some really great options, too. the prices may seem high for a water bottle, but think about how many times you’ve picked up a $3 bottle of water at the bodega. see what i’m getting at here?
when it comes to filtering your tap water, there are a lot options out there, as well. personally, i use a traditional brita pitcher right now, but I’m dying for one of these pitchers from soma. the filters are made from malaysian coconut shells, fine silk and other plant-based materials… health and luxury rolled into one package? perfect.
so, go shell out for a new, fun water bottle and a water filtering system of some kind. you’ll be much healthier and end up saving money over time, which means more disposable income for things like an uncontrollable green juice habit, mani/pedis, yoga classes, and happy hours with your friends. sounds like a win-win to me.
